The National Research Facilities and Equipment Center (NFEC), based at the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding to manage and utilize research facilities and equipment, with the European Science Foundation at the ESF headquarters in Strasbourg (France).
Kwang Sik Lee, President of the KBSI and Jean-Claude Worms, Chief Executive of the ESF, among other VIPS, participated in the event.
This agreement aims to prepare web service and data sharing system and to promote the international coordination and sharing of research infrastructures between ZEUS-WOLF of the NFEC and MERIL portal of the ESF.
With this signature both organisations seal their partnership and strengthen their collaboration in the area of Research Infrastructures, and create a channel through which European researchers have access to information on using large research facilities in Korea, which is expected to lay foundation for collaborative research world-wide as well as between the two countries. For further exploration of concrete cooperation opportunities between the organizations, a delegation from the ESF plans to visit Korea and have information service workshops at the end of October.
Dr. Kwang Sik Lee said, “The case of NFEC of Korea, which established a management and utilization system of national research facilities and equipment, has been receiving great attentions from the nations interested in the efficient use of limited R&D budget.” He added that “we’d like to lay groundwork for globalization of research facilities which have difficulties in operation due to limited research demand.”
